Emphysematous cystitis and pneumobilia

Presentation

Abdominopelvic pain and fever in a diabetic patient.

Patient Data

Age: 95 years
Gender: Female

The gallbladder is not seen at anatomical location due to prior resection. Pneumobilia is evident. 

Small locules of gas are seen throughout the bladder wall, inferring emphysematous cystitis.
Degenerative changes as osteophytosis are seen at the lumbar spine.

Case Discussion

Emphysematous cystitis refers to a gas-forming infection of the bladder wall and diabetes mellitus is the commonest predisposing factor.
