Enchondromatosis (Ollier disease)

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

A 5-year-old girl was referred by her GP with ongoing pain in the right hand and wrist. No history of trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 5 years
Gender: Female

Multiple metaphyseal, lytic, and expansile lesions with narrow transition zones in the metacarpals, proximal and middle phalanges of the middle, ring and little fingers of the right hand, and the little finger of the left hand.

Large similar lesion in the distal right ulna that causes ulnar shortening.

Enchondromatosis is the presence of multiple enchondromas. It is also known as Ollier disease
May be a cause of pain, especially during a growth period.

Lesions are benign, however affected bones have a higher risk of fractures. Also there is increased risk of developing chondrosarcoma later in life.
