Endometrial polyp

Case contributed by Rania Adel Anan
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Abnormal uterine bleeding for the last 2 months.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

A small oval-shaped homogeneously echogenic lesion (about 8.5 x 16 mm) is seen within the upper part of the endometrial cavity being surrounded by a rim of endometrial fluid. A posterior feeding vessel which indicates the vascular stalk attachment of the polyp to the uterus was noted on Doppler interrogation.

Findings were confirmed by 3D ultrasound which showed the lesion distending the upper part of the endometrial cavity with better delineation of its borders.

Case Discussion

Sonographic findings are highly suggestive of an endometrial polyp.

Pedicle artery sign on color Doppler imaging describes a single feeding vessel seen extending to the polyp. This sign is 76% sensitive and 95% specific for endometrial polyps.

3D ultrasound helps in the diagnosis of endometrial polyp.
