Endotracheal tube malposition (neonatal)

Presentation

Respiratory compromise. Intubated. Tube position?

Patient Data

Age: 2 days
Gender: Female

The endotracheal tube is malpositioned with the tip at the carina.

Nasogastric tube suitably sited.

Complete opacification of the left hemithorax.

Right upper lobe consolidation.

10 minutes later

x-ray

The tip of the endotracheal tube has been retracted with the tip now suitably sited in the trachea.

The left lung is now clear.   Right upper lobe consolidation.

Case Discussion

The before and after appearances of the left lung after a malpositioned endotracheal tube was repositioned.

The left lung collapse is quickly reversed after retraction of the endotracheal tube.
