Presentation
Motorcycle accident. Swollen left hand.
Patient Data
Proximal meta-diaphyseal fracture of the thumb metacarpal, in keeping with an epibasal thumb fracture (also known as pseudo-Bennett fracture).
Soft tissue edema around the 1st metacarpal.
Case Discussion
This case illustrates an epibasal thumb fracture, which is an extra-articular fracture of the thumb metacarpal, usually referred to as pseudo-Bennett fractures.
True Bennett fractures have an intra-articular extension.
It is important to differentiate these because while epibasal thumb fractures are usually stable after closed reduction and cast immobilization, Bennett fractures are inherently unstable fractures that almost always demand operative management.
