Epidural hematoma (gross pathology)

Case contributed by Dr Saeed Soltany Hosn

This man died due to blunt head trauma before reaching the hospital

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male

Post mortem

This graphic photo elegantly demonstrates the relationship of the hematoma to the dura, with a characteristic lentiform shape.

The skull has been opened circumferentially and the top of the brain sliced off and removed (B). A large right temporal epidural hematoma (yellow dotted line in second image) is associated with right temporal bone fracture (not visible) and mild midline shift( sub falcial herniation). Lateral ventricles are also compressed. The cause of death was uncal herniation (also not visible).
