Case contributed by Bálint Botz
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Weight loss, swallowing difficulty.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

On the frontal and lateral radiographs an air-fluid level is demonstrated in the region corresponding to the middle third of the esophagus.

Fluoroscopy

An about 10 cm long tight stricture with proximal shouldering is demonstrated in the middle third of the esophagus, which severely limits the flow of even the thin Gastografin contrast agent, demonstrating irregular margins and resultant proximal esophageal dilation.

ct

CT demonstrates the irregular esophageal wall thickening and some moderately enlarged but avidly enhancing locoregional upper mediastinal lymph nodes suggestive of dissemination of the primary malignancy.

Case Discussion

Endoscopic biopsy was performed.

Final diagnosis: Squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus
