Presentation
Pain and dyspnea. Past history of esophageal stent placement for obstructing esophageal cancer.
Patient Data
There are patchy opacities in the right infrahilar and basilar region. There is a small right-sided pleural fluid collection.
An esophageal stent is seen.
Contrast extravasation into the thorax at the level of the proximal aspect of the esophageal stent.
Case Discussion
This is a case of an esophageal perforation. The perforation was likely secondary to both mucosal erosion from the esophageal stent and the esophageal malignancy itself. The patient was urgently taken to the operating room for a video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) washout. The patient would later have an esophagectomy with gastric pull-through.
