Expandable breast implant

Case contributed by Ammar Ashraf
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Preoperative evaluation for total knee replacement surgery. Past history of left mastectomy and leukemia.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

No active cardiopulmonary abnormality is seen. Asymmetry in the size of breasts, with the left breast looking relatively smaller. Multiple surgical clips are seen projecting over the left upper chest/axilla which are likely related to the previous mastectomy. A well-defined ring shape opacity which is likely the port of an expandable breast implant, is seen projecting over the left lower chest.

Case Discussion

The presence of multiple surgical clips in the left upper chest/axilla and asymmetry in the size of the breasts are important clues of previous left breast surgery, if this clinical information is missing in the patient's history. Like this case, past history of left mastectomy, was initially not mentioned in the clinical data and was later on revealed after the chest radiograph which showed the radiopaque port of the breast implant.
