Extension teardrop fracture illustration

Case contributed by Dr Matt Skalski

An extension teardrop fracture is illustrated. Note the involvement anterior structures, with preservation of the posterior structures. Depending on the severity of the injury, and pattern of disc/vertebral involvement, a variety of other injury patterns can be seen with cervical extension trauma.

Case Discussion

This is to be contrasted with flexion teardrop fractures. See related articles for further discussion.
