Extensor pollicis longus tendon rupture

Presentation

Right distal radius dorsal plating 2 months back. Complaining of loss of the thumb extension for the last few days.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

There is discontinuity of the extensor pollicis longus tendon in the wrist region. The gap between the two ends of the tendon is about 50 mm. Radius plate-induced reverberation artifact is present.

Case Discussion

The patient had dorsal radius plating two months back. There was a normal thumb extension after the surgery. He developed a loss of the thumb extension for the last few days. There was no recent injury. Ultrasound was requested to check the extensor pollicis longus integrity. There is tendon rupture with retraction of 50 mm between two ends of the tendon.
