Presentation

Recurrent left peripheral facial palsy.

Patient Data

Age: 5 years
Gender: Female
mri

Prominent thickening with enhancement  along the entire length of the left facial nerve from the meatal segment, labyrinthine, geniculate ganglion, tympanic up to the mastoid segment.

No significant thickening or enhancement of the right facial nerve.

Case Discussion

Facial neuritis (Bell's palsy) is characterized by a rapid onset of unilateral facial paralysis. MRI is the modality of choice for assessment of the different segments of the facial nerve and rule out other pathologies (such as nerve sheath tumors).
