Presentation
Elderly patient with fever of unknown origin.
Patient Data
Fecal impaction with a large volume of fecal material distending the rectum and sigmoid. Thickening of the bowel wall and loss of perifocal fat planes.
Also, the bladder shows signs of cystitis with a thickened wall.
Case Discussion
This elderly patient presented with a history of fever of unknown origin not responding to empiric antibiotic treatment.
After the diagnosis of fecal impaction with stercoral colitis, the impacted feces was manually removed with additional oral laxatives measures. There was a rapid clinical Improvement and the patient could be released from the hospital in good condition.
