Fecal loading

Case contributed by Ian Bickle

Ulcerative colitis. Distended abdomen. Toxic megacolon?

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Gross fecal loading, most pronounced in the descending colon.

Sterilization clips.

Case Discussion

Although not indicated as a study for fecal loading, the reality is it often gets performed under some guise.

Regardless, one might observe it incidentally too, so it's worthwhile being familiar. In this case, the 'boulders' of feces are very apparent in the descending colon.

The elderly with cognitive decline, extreme learning difficulties patients and those on chronic use of co-codamol containing analgesics are amongst the commonest groups of patients to suffer from severe fecal loading.
