Fetal duodenal atresia with polyhydramnios

Presentation

Uterus large for gestational age (36 weeks of gestation).

Patient Data

Age: young adult
Gender: Female

Antenatal ultrasound showing increased liquor amnii (polyhydramnios) with two communicating cystic structures in upper abdomen of the fetus suggestive of double bubble sign and representing over distended fetal stomach and proximal duodenum.

Case Discussion

Duodenal obstruction such as due to atresia is a common cause of the double bubble sign. It may occur sporadically or be associated with a syndrome such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21) or VACTERL.
