Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Routine second trimester scan.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Mild right kidney pyelectasis (renal pelvis AP diameter = 4.6 mm).

Normal left kidney with collapsed pelvicalyceal system.

Case Discussion

Fetal pyelectasis is considered if the renal pelvis AP diameter is more than 4 mm (if <28 weeks) or more than 7 mm (if > 28 weeks). It can be unilateral or bilateral. In the vast majority of cases, it resolves spontaneously. Of note, isolated fetal renal pyelectasis is not considered to increase the risk of aneuploidies.
