Presentation
Abdominal mass.
Patient Data
The pediatrician palpated an abdominal mass. Ultrasound showed a large heterogeneous abdominal mass with mixed echogenicity (not shown here). CT of the abdomen was performed for further evaluation.
CT scan demonstrates a roughly 7 cm diameter density in the right upper zone with preservation of liver and right kidneys border indicating that this is most likely located retroperitoneally. The presence of calcification and bone density suggesting teratoma or fetus in fetu as the cause.
The patient underwent surgery and a large retroperitoneal mass between but separate from right kidney and liver was excised. The diagnosis of fetus in fetu was made.
Case Discussion
Fetus in fetu is rare but should be considered as an alternative to the more common teratoma.
