Fetus in fetu

Case contributed by Dr Saeed Soltany Hosn

The 25-days old male neonate was referred for US because the pediatrician palpated an abdominal mass. There was a large heterogeneous abdominal mass with mixed echogenicity (not shown here). CT of the abdomen was performed for further evaluation.

Patient Data

Age: 25 days
Gender: Male

CT scan demonstrates a roughly 7cm diameter density in the right upper zone with preservation of liver and right kidneys border indicating that this is most likely located retroperitoneally. The presence of calcification and bone density suggesting teratoma or FIF as the cause.

The patient undervent surgery and a large retroperitoneal mass beetwin but separate from right kidney and liver was excised. The diagnosis of FETUS IN FETUS was made.

Case Discussion

Fetus in fetus is rare but should be considered as an alternative to the more common teratoma.
