Fibroadenomas

Case contributed by Garth Kruger
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Routine mammogram left breast

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Female
mammography

Range of calcified lesions in the left breast. The lesions range from non-calcified all the way to densely solid calcified lesions. These lesions are all fibroadenomas.

Case Discussion

The case shows multiple fibroadenomas in a single breast. The case is notable because there are multiple lesions in different stages of involution and degrees of calcification. It actually shows the complete spectrum of calcification in a single patient.

The classic "popcorn" classification is actually just one stage of involution whereby lesions begin calcification and progress with time to a densely calcified solid mass of calcium.

Calcification in a fibroadenoma can change with time like all breast calcifications. The lesions are especially prone to calcification in postmenopausal women.
