Fibromatosis colli

Case contributed by Dr Sangeet Bhalla

17 day old female child presented with lump in right upper neck noticed by parents a week ago. Patient was prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, but the swelling did not subside.

Patient Data

Age: 17 days
Gender: Female

Ultrasound longitudinal and oblique images(not shown) demonstrated increased bulk of right sternocleidomastoid muscle with relatively maintained fibrillar echopattern consistent with the appearance of muscular tissue. The contralateral sternocleidomastoid muscle was scanned and showed normal bulk in comparison to the right. Colour Doppler images show increased significant doppler signals in the bulky muscle. Thyroid glands (image shown), parotid glands and submandibular glands showed normal shape, size and echotexture. No significant lymphadenopathy was noted.

Case Discussion

The patient's history and sonographic findings of increased bulk of the right sternocleidomastoid muscle with no other significant abnormality supports the diagnosis of fibromatosis colli.
