Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Road traffic accident

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Chest X-ray demonstrates multiple left rib fractures involving posterior aspects of 2nd to 9th ribs with segmental fractures at 3rd, 4th and 5th ribs. Additionally, comminuted fracture of left middle clavicle and left sided pneumothorax are identified. Findings are highly suggestive of flail chest.

Case Discussion

The constant motion of the ribs in the flail segment at the site of the fracture is likely to eventually puncture the pleural sac and lung, and possibly causing a pneumothorax.
