Flexor digitorum profundus tendon tear

Presentation

Right middle finger flexor side cut wound about 6 weeks before the presentation. It was a kite thread injury. Complaining of loss of DIP joint flexion.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

There is a complete tear of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon of the middle finger. The proximal tendon stump is at the PIP joint level. The distal stump is at the distal shaft of the middle phalanx level. The flexor digitorum superficialis tendon is intact with normal echopattern. There is no joint effusion. The digital neurovascular bundles are normal.

There is a complete tear of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon. The cut ends are grasped with forceps.

Case Discussion

A female presented with a middle finger cut wound followed by loss of the DIP joint flexion. The diagnosis of flexor digitorum profundus tendon tear was made by clinical examination. The ultrasound was done to measure the gap between the two stumps which was about 22 mm. Surgical repair of the tendon was done.
