Floor of mouth dermoid cyst

Case contributed by Wen Jak Ma
Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Incidental finding during CT cervical spine for trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
ct

Soft tissue density mass containing internal fat seen within the left floor of mouth/sublingual space, displacing adjacent tongue intrinsic and extrinsic muscles.

Case Discussion

Paramedian location and internal fat content raise possibility of this being a dermoid cyst.

These are rare lesions. Exact etiology is not entirely delineated. Some believe they are developmental, associated with inclusion error resulting in entrapped cells that subsequently develop into ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal tissues.

Most come to attention when they become symptomatic e.g. from mass effect or infection.
