Focal fibrosis of the breast

Case contributed by Dr Mark Holland

Driving instructor involved in a car accident with large breast bruising from a seat belt injury 1 year prior to presentation. Now presents with a firm breast mass increasing in size over the last 10 months

Patient Data

Age: 35
Gender: Male

Dense, low reflective mass with no significant vascularity

Case Discussion

At histology there is benign post traumatic fibrosis with a similar pattern to retroperitoneal fibrosis

Focal fibrosis may appear as a either a well circumscribed mass, an irregular mass or as focal asymmetry at mammography.

It is composed of dense collagenous stroma with sparse glandular and vascular elements
