Foreign body

Case contributed by Prof Cláudio Souza

Inflamed, painful, and swollen finger.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

Foreign body on the ventral surface of index finger. There is marked swelling of the finger and a dressing is seen over the distal soft tissues.

Case Discussion

On further questioning, this fashion designer had an accident at work resulting in a foreign body in the distal phalanx of second finger.

Metal and glass foreign material are radiopaque and therefore well visualized on plain film. For wood and plastic, ultrasound is recommended if investigation is required.
