Foreign body: hand

Presentation

History or road traffic accident. Multiple skin abrasions on hand and leg for 1 month. Partial healing of palmar skin abrasion. Complaining of local swelling. No pain. On examination, palpable hard swelling in thenar region.

Patient Data

Age: 45 yrs
Gender: Male
Ultrasound

At the site of swelling pointed by patient (thenar region), there is a strong acoustic shadow by a curvilinear focus; measuring about 9 mm. It is present in the superficial most muscle of the thenar region. There is surrounding hypoechoic rim but no collection.

Case Discussion

History and clinical examination raised possibility of soft tissue foreign body. Ultrasound confirmed foreign body. It was removed surgically, and was a gravel stone.
