Presentation
About one month prior to presentation, the patient had a penetrating injury to the ring finger caused by a wood splinter. The patient had swelling and restricted movement mainly at the ring finger PIP joint.
Patient Data
There is an effusion involving the palmar recess of the PIP joint of the ring finger. There is a 12mm linear echogenic focus within the joint cavity representing a foreign body.
There is no bone erosion. The flexor tendons show normal echopattern without tendon sheath effusion. There is periarticular soft tissue edema on the dorsal side.
Case Discussion
The patient presented following a wood splinter injury to the ring finger. She had finger swelling with restricted movement of the PIP joint.
The ultrasound shows the presence of a foreign body in the palmar recess of the PIP joint of the ring finger.
Surgical exploration was performed and the foreign body was retrieved from the joint.
