Foreign body in heel

Case contributed by Dr Andrew Dixon

Stepped on splinter.? Soft tissue foreign body.

Patient Data

Age: 15
Gender: Female

Tiny 1 mm echogenic foreign body is identified at the plantar lateral aspect of the left heel just below the skin surface.  This is located approximately 2 mm posterior to the site of skin wound.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrates nicely how sensitive ultrasound can be in the soft-tissues for detecting tiny superficial foreign bodies. Wood splinters typically appear echogenic and may cause posterior acoustic shadowing.
