Foreign body - knife in liver

Case contributed by Alexandra Stanislavsky
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Assault, stab wound to thorax. Haemodynamically unstable.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

A metallic density blade overlies the liver. There is a right-sided chest tube, and likely a second catheter overlying right midlung. Endotracheal tube within the right mainstem bronchus near the origin.

Case Discussion

The detached knife blade was lodged in the liver (not visible externally).

Diagnosis was delayed because this density was presumed to be external to patient.
