Foreign body - thumb

Penetrating injury to dorsum of thumb at MCP joint area by thorn - 5 days. C/o local pain. USG to locate or rule out foreign body.

Patient Data

Age: about 35 - 40 yrs
Gender: Male

Linear echogenic focus is noted in  region of interest  - Foreign body.

Length - 3 mm.

Plane - subcutenous plane 

It is superficial to tendon.

Deep to two subcutaneous non-thrombosed veins.

Depth from skin - 3 mm .

Direction - along long axis of tendon. 

Surroundging hypoechoic granulation is noted.

Mild effusion is noted in 1st carpo-metacarpal joint.

Case Discussion

Pre Surgical ultrasound helps to confirm and localize foreign body.

Exploration - thorn at a site mentioned by ultrasound.
