Presentation

Three days history of left hemiparesis in a diabetic (type 2) and hypertensive patient.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female
mri

Wedge-shaped area of low signal on T1, high signal on T2 and FLAIR with restricted diffusion involving the right medial inferior aspect of the pons. No hemorrhagic component seen on GE sequence.

Cerebral volume loss with small vessel ischemic changes are noted.

Case Discussion

Inferior medial pontine syndrome, also known as Foville syndrome, is one of the brainstem stroke syndromes. The infarction involves the medial inferior aspect of the pons secondary to occlusion of the paramedian branches of the basilar artery.
