Fracture of the coronoid process throughout its base (type 3) is associated with a small fracture of the radial head. A minimal amount of hemarthrosis is noted as well.

Case Discussion

Three sub-types of coronoid process fractures are identified.

  • type 1: coronoid process tip avulsion.
  • type 2: fracture of <50% of the coronoid process.
  • type 3: fracture of >50% of the coronoid process.

Note that the fractured coronoid process, in this case, is associated with fracture of the radial head. The absence of dislocated elbow excludes the terrible triad of the elbow.
