Age: 15 years
Gender: Male
ct

Transverse fracture of the olecranon process with a gap as well as comminution of the displaced fragment. No involvement of the coronoid process. Findings are consistent with type IIb fractured olecranon. 

Mild edema of the subcutaneous tissues overlying the posterior aspect of the elbow.

Case Discussion

Olecranon fractures are classified:

Type I:  nondisplaced or minimally displaced.

    Type IA: noncomminuted

    Type IB: comminuted

Type II: displaced proximal fragment without instability

    Type IIA: no comminution with displacement

     Type IIB: comminuted with displacement

Type III: Unstable ulnohumeral joint.

   Type IIIA: no comminution.

    Type IIIB: comminuted.
