Presentation
A 5-month-old boy in the PICU. Post removal of central venous line.
Patient Data
A radiodense linear structure measuring about 15 mm seen overlying the medial end of the right clavicle and posterior medial third rib - along the expected course of the right subclavian vein.
Replacement right jugular central venous catheter suitably sited.
No cardiomegaly. No lung consolidation. No sizable pleural effusion or pneumothorax.
Case Discussion
Imaging features are compatible with a retained fractured central venous catheter fragment in the right subclavian vein.
Due to the risk of complications such as infection, thrombosis and central migration, these retained fragments should be removed by either open surgical or percutaneous endovascular approach.
The patient was referred to the vascular surgeon for possible exploration and removal.
