Gallbladder milk of calcium

Case contributed by Dr. Supriya Gupta

Epigastric pain and vomiting.

Patient Data

Age: 35
Gender: Female

Frontal view of abdomen showing radiopacity superimposed over the right upper abdominal quadrant with multiple radiolucencies. This has the appearance of the gallbladder with multiple gallstones. Since contrast media has not been given, the radiopacity within the gallbladder represents "milk of calcium bile".

Gallstones were found on a bedside ultrasound study in the emergency room. There are stones with posterior acoustic shadowing.

Case Discussion

The terms limy bile and calcium milk gallbladder can be used interchangeably for milk of calcium in the gallbladder and/or bile ducts. This is more commonly found in females over 49 years of age. There is an association with cholecystitis and chronic cholecystitis.
