Gamekeeper thumb and Stener lesion

Presentation

Fall onto his right hand, with pressure on the thumb and index fingers resulting in metacarpophalangeal pain, swelling and functional limitation.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male

The distal attachment of the ulnar collateral ligament was avulsed from its site of bony insertion at the base of the proximal phalanx of the thumb.

Post surgery with internal fixation of the avulsed fragment. 

Swelling and ecchymosis in at the first MCP joint. Comparative image provided. 

Case Discussion

Diagnosis: fracture avulsed ulnar collateral ligament (gamekeeper's thumb) and Stener lesion.

Treatment: surgery.
