Ganglion Cyst of the Elbow

Presentation

Pain and swelling in the anterior aspect of the right elbow.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

MRI images show a circumscribed collection of multiseptate fluid collection of about 2 cm x 1.5 cm on the lateral face of the cubital fossa anterior to the radiocapitellar joint space communicating with it. MRI T2 weighted sagittal view showing hyperintense cyst anterior to radiocapitellar joint with compression on brachialis muscle. STIR coronal images through the elbow show a partial articular-sided tear within the common extensor tendon. Moderate elbow joint effusion.

Case Discussion

Ganglion cysts of the elbow are rare. These are usually asymptomatic. Sometimes they may cause restriction of elbow range of movement or compression of radial or posterior interosseous nerves.
