Post upper gastrointestinal surgery for oesophageal malignancy.

Patient Data

Age: 71
Gender: Male

Large right paramediastinal gas filled structure.

Gasless upper abdomen.

Right thoracotomy.

Case Discussion

The appearances are those of a patient who has undergone a 'gastric pull-up' procedure (oesophagogastrectomy).

Typically performed for a mid-distal oesophageal malignancy the stomach is 'pulled' into the chest to anastomse with the upper oesophagus after resection of a oesophageal segment has been surgically removed.
