Presentation
Preterm baby ( 31 weeks gestation ) with poor sucking and weak crying
Patient Data
Left subependymal oval shape haematoma with averagey density of 65 HU seen adjacent to foramen of Monroe. No evidence of ventricular dilatation or intraventricular extension. Another smaller subepedymal haematoma seen at trigone of right lateral ventricle.
Diagnosis: Grade I germinal matrix haemorrhage
Case Discussion
Germinal matrix is subependymal weak neural tissue that is sensitive to ischaemia which may lead to haemorrhage. Usually it involutes after 32 weeks of gestation. Grading of germinal matrix haemorrhage depends on its ventricular or parenchymal extension.
