Giant colonic diverticulum

Age: 77
Gender: Male

CT abdomen with contrast

Voluminous diverticulum of the proximal sigmoid colon at the lower surface on the antimesenteric side filled with stools compress the bladder dome. Uncomplicated diverticula are detectable along the descending colon. No pneumoperitoneum is present.

Case Discussion

The giant diverticulum of the colon is a rare entity. It is normally located on the antimesenteric border of the sigmoid colon. In most cases, it is considered to be an uncommon complication of a colonic diverticulosis. 

Therapy: left hemicolectomy.
