Gigantic goiter

Case contributed by Ian Bickle
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Presented with a tachyarrhythmia requiring temporary pacing. Neck mass.

Patient Data

Age: 60
Gender: Female
ct

Severely enlarged thyroid gland which extends from just below the mandible to the suprasternal notch.

The trachea is narrowed as it is 'sandwiched' between the almost symmeterically enlarged lobes.

Scattered calcification in the goiter.

Case Discussion

An exceptionally large thyroid goiter. Even the position of the patient's face is altered due to the size of the goiter.

For some time the patient didn't wish to seek medical attention and presumably wore concealing clothing in public, so 'hiding' this very apparent neck mass in social circumstances.
