Glass eye, large liver syndrome (Villaret)

Presents with upper abdominal pain. Past history of enucleation for choroidal melanoma

Patient Data

Age: 40
Gender: Female

Artifical left eye following removal of the globe for melanoma. Markedly enlarged liver due to multiple metastatic melanoma lesions.

Case Discussion

The commonest site of metastasis from choroidal melanoma is the liver producing the classic clinical syndrome of "glass eye, large liver".  This is beautifully visualised in "Demonstrations of physical signs in clinical surgery" by Hamilton Bailey.
