Glass splinter in the palm of the hand

Case contributed by Dr Roberto Schubert

The patient fell on a glass table, that burst under his weight. The accident happened 9 months ago. Swelling and pain in the ulnar aspect of the palm since then.

Patient Data

Age: 30
Gender: Male

About 6 x 2 mm sharply delineated, geometrically-formed signal void extending over almost 4 cm alongside the unar artery.

Case Discussion

The case nicely demonstrates that solid state foreign bodies are typically signal void and that some glass is diamagnetic and does not cause much susceptibility artifacts. However, it is hard to explain why this wasn't  found on prior ultrasound scans.
