Case Discussion

The patient went on to have surgery.

Histology

The biopsy shows a moderately cellular astrocytic tumor.  The astrocytes have enlarged elongated and hyperchromatic nuclei.  These are admixed with scattered foamy macrophages.  Mitoses are identified. There are foci of endothelial cell hyperplasia.  Necrosis is also seen, along with necrotic blood vessels.  The features are those of glioblastoma multiforme.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS: glioblastoma

Note: IDH mutation status is not provided in this case and according to the current (2016) WHO classification of CNS tumors, this tumor would, therefore, be designated as a glioblastoma NOS
