Gluteal silicone implants properly positioned within the subfascial planes superficial to the gluteus maximus muscles.
Gluteal augmentation was introduced in 1965 with the insertion of breast prostheses in the buttocks and is now one of the fastest-growing fields in plastic surgery 1. Surgical techniques including subcutaneous, subfascial, intramuscular, and submuscular pockets 1.
Complications include seroma, dehiscence, infection, implant visibility, and implant displacement are reported more frequently with superficial implant placement. Submuscular (between the gluteus maximus and medius) implant placement has a risk of damage to the sciatic nerve and is rarely performed 1.
