High-grade partial tears of the right gluteus minimus and medius tendons at their insertions on the greater trochanter. Associated subgluteus minimus and medius bursitis.

Right greater trochanteric bursitis.

Extensive tear of the right acetabular labrum with paralabral cysts posteriorly extending close to the sciatic nerve.

Case Discussion

The fluid-sensitive MRI images illustrate the anatomy of the bursae around the hip. The subgluteus minimus bursa and subgluteus medius bursa are deep to the corresponding tendons, and there may be fluid signal in these bursae when there is pathology of the corresponding tendons, as shown in this case. The greater trochanteric bursa overlies the posterior facet of the greater trochanter.
