Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Chronic left flank pain. History of laparotomy following road traffic accident 8 months prior.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

There is an arciform echogenic structure with intense posterior acoustic shadowing located in the left flank, displacing the adjacent bowel loops.

The rest of the ultrasound exam was unremarkable.

Case Discussion

Ultrasound feature of an arciform echogenic structure with intense posterior shadowing in a patient with a history of surgery is highly suggestive of a gossypiboma which was confirmed at surgery (surgical gauze).
