Case contributed by Dr Abdallah Al Khateeb

Abdominal pain and guarding. Underwent left salpingoopherectomy recently.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years old
Gender: Female

High density serpiginous "lines" at the mid abdomen.

Walled-off fluid collection with foci of gas and high density serpiginous material within.

Surrounding bowel loops show ileus and the mesentery is congested.

Case Discussion

Missing surgical material inside the abdominal cavity is generally a rare occurrence. In this case, a surgical gauze was left within the peritoneal cavity that resulted to abscess formation in this septic patient.
