Mechanical fall, right hip pain on weight-bearing.
Patient Data
Minimally displaced right greater trochanteric fracture. No displaced femoral neck fracture. Calcified atherosclerotic disease.
Minimally displaced right greater trochanter fracture with no displaced neck of femur fracture, although there are bone marrow changes within the right intertrochanteric region in keeping with an undisplaced incomplete femoral neck fracture.
MRI confirms a right greater trochanteric fracture extending into and partially across the posterior aspect of the intertrochanteric line. Findings in keeping with an incomplete right intertrochanteric neck of femur fracture.
Case Discussion
'Isolated' greater trochanteric fractures should undergo cross-section imaging as many are not isolated nor minor 1, and further imaging should always be recommended when reporting these radiographs. Access to CT can be easier, although MRI, in particular, the T1 weighted sequences will most clearly define the fracture pattern.
