Growing skull fracture

Presentation

Enlarging scalp mass. Trauma one year ago with loss of consciousness and hospital admission.

Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Female
ct
  • left frontal calvarial widened linear fracture
  • underlying CSF density herniating  encephalomalacia
  • three dimensional CT reveals widened fracture

Case Discussion

Young children (less than three years) are more prone to develop growing skull fracture, also children with cephalohematoma, immediate seizures after trauma and when CT at the time of initial presentation exhibited linear skull fracture more than 4 mm wide.

Knowledge and awareness by parents and front-line health care personnel are needed to avoid misdiagnosis.
